UPDATE on 5/27/13:
A reminder that Negrito Work Party will be held May 31, June 1 and June 2. Anyone that can attend and help would be welcome. Just let me know if you are going to be there so I can plan food (Friday dinner, Saturday breakfst, lunch and dinner, Sunday breakfast).
Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Mike Arnold who died last week in Aztec. I think I speak for everyone when I say that the Arnold family will be in our prayers.
However, the tragedy has also caused another problem for us. It is likely that the memorial event for Mike will be held on Saturday, June 1. While it is not for sure yet, it is looking like that will be the case. If so, Ron Keller, State Avaition Safety Director will need to attend the service and will not be able to be at the Negrito workparty. That leaves us with less pickup for hauling.
We have at least one loader and trailer that we can haul down to Negrito, but we NEED A PICKUP CAPABLE OF HAULING THAT. The minimum weight is about 8,000 lbs.
What would be ideal is to haul a 20 foot trailer that is also available. That way we could take two loaders on one trailer. But to do that, we would need a truck capable of hauling 12,000 lbs.
I am getting to the point that I will have to consider renting a truck. But before I do that I was sure hoping that someone in our organization would have access to a truck / trucks.
PLEASE let me know if you have a truck that would be suitable!!!
Regardless, I want to thank everyone who has committed to helping out. Anyone else interested in helping would be welcome. Even if you just fly in for the day, it would be a help. But just let me know if you are coming so I can plan food.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone at Negrito.
Regards, Larry
Update on 5/8/13:
May 31, June 1 & June 2 - NMPA Negrito, NM Work Day
We are going to have a Negrito Work Party on May 31, thru June 2nd.
Anybody who would have time to come up and assist would surely be appreciated!! Please let me know if you are coming!
Will be furnishing dinner on the night May 31, breakfast, lunch and dinner on June 1 and breakfast on June 2, so please let me know if you are coming so I can plan for food.
IMPORTANT:
I have a loader available in Santa Fe, that I need to get to Negrito, but we need a ¾ ton pickup to haul it up there. IF YOU HAVE A PICKUP AND WOULD BE WILLING TO TOW THE LOADER UP TO NEGRITO, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!
Also, I have one bobcat loader that we are renting in Alb and I could consider renting a second one if I would have a pickup to haul it up.
So we need pickups!!! Let me know if you have one and would be willing to take it up to Negrito.

Tentative Schedule as of 4/18/2013:
We would like to attempt another workparty at Negrito on May 31, June 1 and 2. I would plan on arriving around midday Friday the 31st, working Friday afternoon, most of Saturday and leave around midday Sunday. We will monitor fire conditions and activity and touch base with you before showing up. Lets hope there are no fires this year!!!
1. Move the existing rock piles that are there now from the last effort by dispersing them into the trees.
2. Continue to move rocks back from the centerline of the runway, clearing an area of about 100ft. from each side of the centerline and, this time, disperse them into the trees instead of stacking them. I am anticipating having two or three bobcat loaders to help move the rocks and smooth the depressions that are left when the rocks are removed.
3. Install a forest service approved fire ring at the camp site (see link below for the product description). This is the same fire ring that Mark Spencer and the Arizona Pilots Association has installed in several sites in AZ. There is already an existing fire area right there, and I would like to put in the metal fire ring with a grill to try and improve fire safety at the site. Let me know if that is ok and if there are any requiremetns of the installation that I need to observe.
4. Run the roller that is there up and down the runway and address any holes, mud tracks left by vehicles, etc. that may have developed over the winter.
5. Install a new windsock. Last fall the windsock was beginning to look kind of faded.
6. Paint the tetrahedron and make sure it is working properly.
Here is a link that shows the fire ring that we would like to install.
