CRACK SEALING

Crack sealing will take place on Saturday, November 14th, and if necessary into the morning of the 15th.  Long distance volunteers will necessarily fly in, and must arrive anytime on Friday the 13th, or before 8:00AM on the 14th. Beyond this and the airstrip will be closed except for evening departures on Saturday the 14th. If you are coming from the Phoenix, or other area close enough to drive, we need you to drive, and will have the gate open for this weekend only.

All Meals are provided!!

Friday Dinner, Saturday Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Clothing and Personal Protection Equipment Necessary!

Shoes need to be closed toed and leather like hiking shoes .  Steel toes will not be required. Pants need to be cotton heavy blue jeans or regular blue jeans again they should be old and ready to get black spots on them. Shirts also need to be cotton and long sleeved. Also wool is acceptable but maybe too warm. It is handy to have a big cotton handkerchief to wrap around your neck.   But not so big as to have loose ends that would get stuck in moving machinery  parts . Gloves that are leather or thicker leather for your hands. The longer the gauntlet up the arm the better. Safety glasses of dark or clear. Earplugs may be optional but some people like them, and the hat, same thing cotton no synthetics. Baseball caps work well . Synthetics cannot be worn around the hot machines as synthetic materials will melt and burn to the skin.

Update on 11/3/2015:

The big weekend is nearly here! Everything is leading up to the weekend of November 13th, 14th, and 15th as the big crack sealing event. Crafco will be hauling their rigs out there and providing three men to train and help us, but we must have enough hands to rotate crews every thirty minutes or so. We cannot afford to run short on volunteers that weekend, so please make a commitment to help by sending an email to me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.!  Even if you can only drive in for a few hours, please let us know.

RSVP!

Please, we need to know if you are coming to help save Grapevine the weekend of November 13, 14th &15th. Several have already RSVP’d, but many have only responded verbally. We need an email from you with your cell phone number to: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. We’ll need this to contact you in case of any last minute changes!

FLYING or DRIVING: If you live anywhere within 2 hours of the lake, we need you to drive in! It’s a nice drive, and there is plenty of parking and camping space. If you are further and must fly, please plan on arriving on Friday, November 13th! (Sorry for the date) We will be working on Friday afternoon, so earlier the better, but landing will be possible all day. Use 122.9 to announce your arrival so we can clear the runway for you. Landing will only be possible until 7:30AM on Saturday! You must let us know if you are flying in!

SPECIAL CLOTHING REQUIRED: 100% Cotton clothing, long sleeves and pants, all leather shoes, NO synthetic or FAUX leather, leather/cotton work gloves, and safety glasses are a must.As an idea for leather shoes, if you do not own a pair that you are willing to sacrifice, Big 5 has pull on leather or suede tops for about $20. Ross can also be a source of low cost leather sneakers and such. Be certain they are not artificial leather! Don't forget a hat and sun block! Push brooms, flat blade shovels, gas powered blowers and rakes may be of help, and if you can bring a gas grill sized full propane tank, as we may need extra supplies for our weed burners.

Directions:

From the Payson and the dam bridge end on highway 188 you will go towards Globe and at milepost 238 with Adopt-A-Highway sign "The Otis family", go 0.5 miles past and on the left hand side there will be the turn off with gate and cattle guard with ribbon tape.

From the Globe end of highway 188 at milepost 237, " Ewings family and puppies " sign, - from there go 0.4 miles and turn right through gate and cattle guard marked with ribbin tape.

Sunday 11/15 – Half work day

Sun Breakfast – Chef Kit. Are you getting the idea that Kit is working very hard to keep you fed? Mike and Jim on coffee.

The main courses are all provided, but please consider a side dish of your choice for Saturday's lunch and Dinner!

Work Schedule:

Friday -  will be an important prep day with folks arrivals beginning morning and through mid day. We will be running a brush hog up and down the edges, back filling the larger cracks with gravel, and blowing off the runway. Landings will be taking place on Friday by those living too far to drive, or some having other necessity to fly in. We need to limit fly ins as much as possible.

Saturday - It's bright eyed and bushy tailed by 6:30 so we can get our fill of and get a safety brief and training before the the first crew begins work at 7:00AM. We'll be rotating crews throughout the day, giving each team several opportunities pitch in. Lunch will be served to teams as the rotate out.

There will be something to do for everyone, and plenty of time to rest, between rotations.

Sunday - If there's work left to do, we'll start the same as Saturday, and hopefully finish by late morning.
