Down focuses on Loss of Control. Loss of Control In-Flight was the dominan
t cause of fatal general aviation accidents over the last decade. Loss of C
ontrol refers to accidents resulting from situations in which the pilot sho
uld have either maintained or regained control of the aircraft, but did not
. Join the thousands of other pilots across the country in attending this e

nowledgement of Industry Sponsor(s):\nThe FAA Safety Team 2012 National Saf
ety Stand Down\n\nAttend this exciting event and earn all three Knowledge C
redits for a Basic Phase in the WINGs Program! Knowledge and Proficiency ar
e the foundations of safe aviation operations.\n\nForty percent of the fata
l accidents during the period 2001-2010 were categorized as Loss of Control
In-Flight (LOC-I), outpacing the number two fatal accident category, Contr
olled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT), by a three-to-one margin. Most fatal LOC-
I accidents happened during the maneuvering phase, occurring about 1.4 time
s as often as accidents during the approach and enroute phases, and 26 time
s more frequently than accidents during both emergency landing phases combi
ned.\n\nAt this exclusive presentation will look at 3 aspects of LOC:\n\n1.
Advanced Preflight - LOC often occurs when a pilot is surprised or over lo
aded by a mechanical failure like a flight control malfunction or loss of e
ngine power. These LOC accidents could be prevented if pilots could discove
r and prevent mechanical problems on preflight.\n\n2. Aeronautical Decision
Making - Many LOC accidents and incidents could be prevented by pilots wat
ching for clues and cues of problems and then applying good decision making
to avoid a LOC situation. In other words, pilots should use their superior
intellect so they don't have to use their superior flying skills.\n\n3. Ho
w to Recover from a LOC Situation - If all else fails and a pilot finds the
mselves in an LOC situation there are often things that can be done to rega
in control of the aircraft.\n\nAttend this exclusive FAASTeam presentation
and....\n\nBecome part of the ongoing FAASTeam effort to improve aviation s
afety,\nDiscover new ways to approach safety, how to identify risks and how
to reduce those risks, and\nLearn methods and procedures to sharpen your j
udgment and flight discipline -- those key behavioral elements of sfe flyin
g - and increase your situational awareness.\nThe 2012 FAA Safety Team (FAA
STeam) Safety Stand Down is being sponsored by the Ryan Field Airport. We'd
like to recognize their management for their contributions to the AZ FAAST
eam. They provide facilities and logistic support for FAASTeam seminars.\n\
